The Mango Wars is the story of a twelve-year-old Jamaican girl who is the leader of her gang of sisters and cousins in their poor neighborhood. Despite the fact that Janet is going blind, she leads the cause to protect their fruit trees from thieving neighborhood kids. Her world changes when she befriends a rich girl from Rohampton who has never climbed a mango tree before...not until she meets Janet, that is.
Janet shifted the rake to her front, as if it could hide the mango-stained play dress Daddy made her from an old flour sack. The girl, Keisha, ran a hand down one of her long black ponytails. She had a fair complexion, like Mari. Like the popular girls at Janet’s school—the ones that called her names and made fun of the way she tilted her head when she looked at things.
